Yes, yes, everyone I know who's both an author and a D&D player has an "amazing idea" for a Baldur's Gate-related Forgotten Realms novel. I'm not special.

But dammit, I have AN AMAZING IDEA FOR A BALDUR'S GATE-RELATED FORGOTTEN REALMS NOVEL! It doesn't even require readers to have read BG3, and it doesn't revolve around the main/origin characters so it doesn't lock any of them into a canonical ending!

And there's no functional way to pitch it! AAAAUUUGGHHH!

(First person who tells me "FilE oFf THe sERiAL nuMBeRs anD MAke iT YoUr OWn thInG!!!" gets unfriended. Seriously.)

And the answer is always, always because the oligarch owners support what's happening. They aren't telling you things because they don't want you to know.

This isn't their "journalist" employees failing to do their job. This *is* their job as it's now defined.

Until you fully internalize that the modern mainstream "news" media is not the failed safety rail you thought it was, but rather a successful and integral and eager part of the enemy apparatus, you aren't prepared to fight it.

As an author, you do not get to choose whether or not your work has a political message. It does.

You only get to choose if you wish to make any conscious effort to deliberately shape what that message is going to be.

...is Good, Actually. It's a lot of fun, and I love the tweaks and changes they're making from the comic book and movie stories we already know. (And yes, that includes the alteration of the supporting cast and the ethnicity/gender swaps.)

Listen, I love the standard Spidey supporting cast. But this an alternate version, not a replacement. I haven't lost anything--and neither have you.

And this is coming from someone who really, really wants to see Spider-Man stories leave high school well and truly behind. So for me to be so fond of the first two episodes of a show set in Peter's freshman year should tell you something.

...in the upcoming Eternal Warrior tie-in novel was made well over a year ago.

But if I'd known then where our culture and our government would be by the time the book came out this coming May...

I'd have included two.

Just don't

I will be muting or unfriending people who downplay the danger and evil of the new administration and the next few years (at least).

But I will also be muting or unfriending people who have given up, who say that we're fucked and fighting can't/won't accomplish anything.

Nothing is foreordained, and even slowing their agenda is a victory. We might be screwed even if we fight, but we're definitely screwed if we don't.

 Trans men are men.

Trans women are women.

Nonbinary folks are neither (or both, or sometimes one or the other).

An executive order claiming otherwise has exactly as much moral and scientific validity as one claiming that gravity is no longer to be obeyed.

(It also does not have the power of law. Do not capitulate in advance.)

TikTok

Look, I don't care for the TikTok format. But let's not pretend this ban is anything but open and naked manipulation of the market.

American oligarchs who run competing platforms worked with politicians who dislike some of the news, information, and political/social discussion that was happening on TikTok, conspiring to kill it using security as a smokescreen. They're ostensibly banning it because its Chinese owners might be doing the same thing with user data that we know American companies are doing with theirs (and causing far more harm with it).

It's a joke, and not a funny one.

I am a bit concerned--not making assumptions, not writing the show off, not casting aspersions, but a bit concerned--about some of the implications of the new Daredevil trailer.

It appears that we are getting yet another "Matt tries to stop being Daredevil for a while but gets drawn back into it" story, and I'm frankly not here for it.

We've seen that. We've seen it multiple times. And I wasn't that big a fan of the idea the first time around.

If it's only an episode or two, I'll live with it and it won't even impact my enjoyment of the show much. But if we're looking at a good chunk of the season, I don't know if I'll be on board for the whole thing, no matter how good it otherwise might be.

Hopefully--as has been the case on some of the other Marvel shows--the trailer's focusing on stuff from the early episodes only, and my concerns will prove unfounded.

You know what?

I am constantly posting self-deprecating jokes about my impatience in waiting for replies from people on work-related stuff. And most of what I say in those contexts is true. I am impatient, and my clinical anxiety does get the better of me, and both the publishing and movie businesses do move at a glacial pace even at the best of times.

But you know what?

Sometimes, sometimes, when a discussion has been ongoing or there are certain contractual or deadline issues pressing, it is both reasonable and professional to expect some alacrity. Sometimes, being irritated and upset that someone hasn't gotten back to me is absolutely legitimate.

And I need to do myself the courtesy of acknowledging those occasions and not writing them off as "my usual bullshit."

"Advice"

I am not calling anyone out specifically. I am not looking for anyone to chastise anyone else on my behalf.
But I want to be clear...

If I say something like "Please no advice" or "Please no suggestions" in one of my posts?

THAT IS NOT OPTIONAL. IT IS NOT A REQUEST.

I know people want to be helpful, but offering "help" when I don't require it and/or am not in a place to receive it, and especially when I have actually said as much, ISN'T help. It in fact makes things markedly harder.

Sometimes I explicitly post in search of advice, and ask for it. Sometimes I don't say either way, in which case it's up to your discretion.

But when I'm specifically posting to vent or make a statement and I actively don't want suggestions--and again, have said so--I expect anyone with enough respect for me to even be on my friends list to respect that boundary as well.

...(wife's employer changed providers) means one of my meds has jumped from $50/month to over $1,600! Yay!

No, that's not a typo.

Yes, we'll be talking to the insurance and looking into discount programs. I already know what can be done. PLEASE NO ADVICE.

"You bastards are all so eager to deal with the otherworldly, but you have no idea what that means. Mine is the blood of the Colorless Waste. We stand between the Ninefold Citadel and the Bottomless Abyss, at the raging heart of the Blood War, and we thrive. Let me show you how..."

---Xolomon bel Apkos, chthonic tiefling

Mind you, I immediately borked both my attacks that turn, and later in the encounter spent three full rounds of combat mind-controlled into inactivity.

But dammit, the boast was cool. 😝

As long as I've been doing this, as many novels as I've written, some things haven't changed since before I ever broke into professional writing.

Writing an actual, official D&D tie-in novel is still on my professional bucket list.

 Full circle, I guess.

I mean, not a true circle, since twenty years ago was LJ, not DW, but... Sort of the same thing.

I don't know how much I'll be using this place. I don't particularly want a new social media. But with the increasing (and deliberate) enshittification of Facebook, I also don't know how much longer I can justify using that platform, and I need somewhere I can post stuff that is longer--and has more privacy control--than BlueSky.

So this is me establishing a beachhead on DreamWidth. Or a foothold. Or maybe a foothead. Whatever.
